When students struggle it is easy to blame the things we can't control- their educational background, their fluency in English, their home environment, their motivation- the list could go on and on. It is students like Martin who encourage educators to look in the mirror and embrace the power they have to change the trajectory of student lives. Meaningful literacy is the backbone of inclusion and participation in the democratic process and the American Dream. Since earning the national 180 Award in 2015 Martin has traveled the United States telling his story to inspire educators to invest in the resources and mindset needed to properly educate and empower students arriving to the United States with trauma, gaps in their formal education, no mastery of the Roman alphabet, but a heart full; of promise and opportunity.
