When refugee resettlement agency World Relief notified the Language Institute that two students from Syria would soon be enrolling in the Fall of 2015 no one was surprised. We had been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to welcome people from this war-torn nation for months. However, we had not anticipated that a camera crew from ABC World News would accompany the family as they traveled from Jordan to California. As documented in the Nightline episodes linked below, the Al Jawabra family opened the nation’s eyes to the plight of refugees. Alaa, and her fellow Middle Eastern refugee peers, used this roundtable conversation with David Muir as an opportunity to teach the United States who they really are and exactly what they have to offer.
